A
Denver, Colorado native, Lynn's interest in art began approximately
fifteen years ago when he enrolled in classes at the Art Student's
League of Denver. Through a period of exploration and discovery,
Lynn determined that his primary interest was in oil painting,
and more specifically, plein-air painting of landscapes. "En plein
air" is the French expression for painting "in open air," the
old tradition of setting up your easel and confronting nature
directly. An easel in the corner of the studio is no substitute
for the wonders of nature: the warmth of the sun or maybe the
cold of the snow, the sound of a stream nearby or possibly a bird
chirping, the changing light, a deep blue sky, a red barn. All
of the senses are on alert and become part of the artist's personal
interpretation of the subject. To this arena, this challenge,
Lynn brings his brushes and paints. It is his responsibility to
decide on composition and design, to make selections of color,
value and texture, to emphasize or intensify certain elements
and suppress or eliminate others. Nature suggests ideas; the artist
makes choices with each stroke of his brush. In this plein-air
environment, Lynn produces, not a copy of nature, but his personal
interpretation of the subject. This ability to create is originality,
the truth of art!
