Susiehyer is on a Roll!
Our 2009 Best of Show winner is on a real roll. Susiehyer
is excited and we are thrilled for her success; she works
hard by travelling to many plein air shows all summer.
"Guess what? I won (did I tell you this
already, please forgive my excitement if I did) both the
Victor show AND the Salida plein air AND the Salida Quick
draw!!! Yes I did tell you about Victor. I think you said
you put it on the website. Here are the Salida winners.
The nocturn is the best of show and the stream is the qd."
Congratulations Susiehyer!
Another best of show for
Susiehyer!
Susiehyer reports that she won the Victor Plein
Air show!
She says: It is a great place to sell
..sales
are good. They have Purchase Patrons for the show, where
they exact a promise from x number of people that they will
buy a painting--people RUSH the doors after the cocktail
party to get in and see the paintings they can pick from,
I've never seen anything like it. What a great idea to get
commitments in advance. (Glenwood Springs Annual Fall
Art Festival has a similar system.)
It sure looks better in person than on this photo."

Afternoon Pastures, 6 x 8
Congrats to Dina Gregory

watch out nature, I plan to be the biotic plein air painter.

PAAC Texas Paint Out an
Awesome Success!
We were featured in two separate newspaper articles.
The Frederiksburg Standard Radio Post on April
1, 2009 and on April
8, 2009.

Members from Colorado, Texas, Nebraska, and Arkansas, (27
participants in all) travelled to Fredericksburg, TX to
paint the hill country and search for Bluebonnets (We found
some!). We were charmed by the famous southern hospitality
of many local painters who joined us, location hosts who
opened their homes and properties to us; and our hosts,
Barb and Chuck Mauldin who entertained us all at two dinners
in their wonderful new home and studio. We really enjoyed
the live oak trees, being kissed by a llama, the different
birds, seeing wild turkeys,Texas sunsets, cows and goats
on the roads; we struggled with the southern greens and
grays, and just absorbed everything in this beautiful community.
We are already looking forward to next year, Chuck!

Coni Grant is this month’s
Featured Artist in Judsons Art Outfitter’s Newsletter!
Coni Grant - Contemporary Plein Air
"Nature has always influenced my outlook on life. Painting
outside is the best of all worlds. Plein air work forces
you to respond from the gut - pitting all you know (even
what you don't know that you know) against time and the
elements. It can be painting at its most raw, but working
in the landscape is its own reward. Dramatic weather, changing
conditions, they add to the experience, and to the stories
afterward. Any day painting out is a good day.

'7 Mile Plaza', 12" x 16", Oil
In 1998, I was fortunate to study with Charles Movalli,
who I consider to be one of my greatest influences. On one
perfect morning at Morro Bay, California - light breeze,
the sound of small waves lapping against the pier while
gulls flew overhead and wonderful fishing boats everywhere,
- four or five painters were lined up along the board walk,
intent at our french easels. From behind us strolled a couple,
enjoying the day, and viewing each artist in turn until
they came up behind me and I could just over-hear the man
say to the woman on his arm, "Now THIS is the life."
I will never forget that moment: the day, the breeze, and
my clear-as-a-bell thought, "This IS the life; and
I'm livin' it." When the couple passed, I recognized
the man as the well known actor Hector Elizondo."

Ted Garcia catches the Media Eye!
Ted Garcia has started a challenging painting
project for 2009 that he calls "PLEIN-AIR 365"
by Ted Garcia. Ted writes:
"While visiting family in Norman, OK I decided to go
out and paint the last sunset of 2008. As I ventured out
I came upon a wonderful warm green field, a scene that I
normally can't paint in Colorado in December. So I set up
my easel and frantically began to try and capture all the
color and splendor that was moving so quickly before my
eyes. As I was painting, I started to think about how lucky
I am to have an opportunity to be outside painting, doing
what I love. And with that in my mind I begin to wonder
about all the new and exciting places that 2009 would bring.
Then it hit me, I thought wow, I'm going to do a plein-air
painting everyday and this is when the title "PLEIN-AIR
365" came to me. I thought to myself how many painters
have the opportunity or the time to go out everyday no matter
what, come wind, snow, rain or shine and paint wherever
chance may take them and at the end of the year have 365
new paintings. Wow, I thought how exciting, three hundred
and sixty five new plein-air paintings. I invite you to
view my website www.tedgarcia.com
each month to see where the journey has taken us. And if
all goes well, I will post a new painting every day for
'A Daily Journey'."
Ted has received alot of media attention, and strictly
by accident or fate! Here is a link to an interview: http://www.rogerwendell.com/art.html
or http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IpLqjW6V5yA
He was also on News4 on March 26th, painting in the

fortitude! We wish you well on this amazing journey Ted!

Beth Erlund sends news of a book award!
"The
book award I won was a Bronze Medal in the Moonbeam Children's
Book Awards, 4 - 8 yr old picture books. They gave awards
to 138 books out of almost 1100 entries. My book is called
The Feather Club and I am both the author and illustrator.
All the illustrations are done in batik, my "real"
job and this is my second book. The story revolves around
a Canada goose who is making her first flight south and
ends up alone, having to figure out how to go south. She
makes friends that are very different from her and discovers
that she can do something seemingly impossible. She learns
that new friends come in all different colors, sizes, and
ages and can become your friends for life. The books can
be purchased on my website erlundjohnsonstudios.com
or ordered from Tattered Cover or Barnes and Noble.

Cindy Carrillo is the Featured Artist of the Month
in the online October Judsons Plein Air Outfitters Newsletter!
Judsons is one of PAACs Partners; dont forget
that all members receive discounts from our Partners!
Cindy says:
The term plein air painting can sound romantic, bring
up visions of Monet & friends, canoeing, painting
and picnicking. My experiences have been a bit different.
Painting from life is for me the only way to fully see
and then translate into paint my experience and vision.
This usually includes scary stray dogs, snakes, javalina
(wild pigs in the desert), nasty bugs, Arizonas
summer heat, cactus stickers, dust storms and the worst,
wind. In spite of all this I would rather be outdoors,
me and my easel, than in a studio any day. I enjoy getting
other painters outside to give it a try, to see how it
will affect their artwork and how they see. Plein air
painting removes the staleness and predictability of working
from photos. The photo, above, was taken in Taos this
last summer on a painting trip through New Mexico and
on to Estes Park, Colorado.

Mother Earth Exhibition 2008
June 11th thru September 6, 2008
Cheryl St. John was chosen to paint a 5ft diameter globe
to be shown in Eagle throughout the Summer of 2008. The
theme for the project was "Love your Mother Earth".
Cheryl was contacted by Betty Ford Alpine Gardens in Vail
and asked to paint her vision of the gardens as her theme
for the globe which worked out well as what better way to
Love your Mother Earth than to cover it with flowers? After
about 65 hours of work in Cheryl's garage (it wouldn't fit
in the studio) this is what is on display in the Town of
Eagle.
Cheryl was one of three artists selected from 25 participants
in The Bells and Butterflies" plein air competition
in Vail, Colorado on Monday June 30, 2008. The top three
paintings are honored by showing at Vail International Gallery
this Summer 2008.
The globes will be auctioned on September 6th at the annual
Potatopalooza festival in Eagle with the proceeds benefitting
various children's organizations in the Eagle/Vail valley.
The hope is that a supporter of Betty Ford Alpine Gardens
in Vail will step up and buy the globe at auction and send
it back over to Vail to sit on display in the garden indefinitely.
