Biography
Marcio Correa is a representational artist who works both in watercolor and acrylic on a variety of subjects, more commonly urban scenes and landscapes. Marcio is a signature member and former President of the Colorado Watercolor Society, a signature member of the Red River Watercolor Society, and a member of Plein Air Artists Colorado. He participates in art events throughout the country, and his paintings are featured in regional and national juried shows, where they have won numerous awards.
“My art is mainly about a sense of place, the interplay of light and dark, relationships of colors and shapes I find in nature or urban environment, the sensations that are unique to a location and a time. My watercolors and acrylic paintings of landscapes, rural views or street scenes are all about being there and reacting to these stimuli. They seek to capture both the subject and my inner response to it, a dialog between the outer and inner worlds. This is why I prefer to paint on site, and why my paintings vary in degrees of realism or Impressionism or even some abstraction, depending on the location and my feelings about the subject at the time. My studio paintings are also inspired by such feelings aided by memory, sketches done on location and my own photographs of the places I visit.”
Coming from a background in education, languages and literature, Marcio had some limited experience in commercial art for advertising, but learned to paint mostly on his own and later through short workshops with renowned artists such as Alvaro Castagnet, John Salminen, Arne Westerman and Randall Sexton. Traveling is a passion and a continuous source of inspiration, although Marcio is equally motivated by more familiar subject matter. Participating in events and painting alongside other artists is another way Marcio finds to share his love of art and learn from others.
“Drawing and sketching had always been part of my life, but it was in 2001 that I took up painting. After a period of study and practice, I started entering exhibitions and participating in art societies, and my watercolors won a number of awards, including Best of Show at the 2015 Colorado Watercolor Society State Exhibition. There was a long pause when other work, and family obligations did not leave me enough time or space to produce finished work, and for a while I focused on urban sketching. I have since returned to painting, this time in a new medium, acrylics, and focusing more on painting on location.”
Marcio is originally from Brazil, but since 1996 has called Colorado home. He lives in Longmont, with his wife and teenage sons.
